For a split second, she remembered she had a ferry to catch to get back home, but the beat was somewhat magical and quickly whisked her thoughts away. The drums where pulling her like a magnet. As she followed the mesmerizing sound she saw three women and two men around a fire. They were all radiating with joy, strength and inner power. One of them noticed her presence and they stopped and waived her to come closer. A little shy but excited, Joyce walked towards the fire and sat down.

With a big smile, one of the women, (she found out later her name was Chris) explained to Joyce that the group had just completed a 2 ½ day Healing –Drum making workshop.

The entire group took part in telling Joyce in short what the workshop entailed.

They all had met three days ago in the evening for a smudging ceremony. In this traditional cleansing ceremony everybody bathed in the smoke of sacred herbs to let go of any unwanted energy. The room and all tools and materials were are also purified. Then everybody started preparing the buffalo hide. The next day was set aside to work on the frame of the drum and by evening it was time for stringing the drum. Everybody had a little story about "not being in the moment" and making mistakes which then would take quite a while to correct. One woman chuckled "isn’t that just like life?"

On the last day the group was making the drum beater. And then it was time for the Blessing Ceremony where everybody introduced their drum to the spirits. Just at the end of this ceremony was when Joyce came to the group.

Chris stood up and with a couple beats on her beautiful drum got everybody’s attention. She began to speak with a very strong but gentle voice:

"This is the end of a journey and the beginning of a new one. You all have just finished creating a powerful tool for healing, growth and transformation. Use your drum well!

Throughout history, drums have echoed the heartbeat of the people. Carrying our prayers, joys and sorrows through the universe and beyond, drums have gone hand-in-hand with other healing practices. Drumming can awaken soul memory, which offers us comfort and a feeling of knowing.
 
 

As you worked on your cedar drum frame, cut your buffalo hide, strung your drum and made the drum beater, you created and developed a very tender relationship with your drum ... she is now part of you, a sacred friend . A feeling you probably would not have found if you would had simply bought your drum in a store or on the Internet.

Many Indigenous people around the world use their drum as powerful energy medicine and if you ever had the chance to be part of a Healing Drumming Circle you will feel the tremendous energy that comes through the drum.

You are now carrying this medicine. Use it wisely and with great respect. You gave the Buffalo and the Cedar tree that have died a strong voice back. This voice will be heard by every cell of your body and by Mother Earth. It will give you strength, clarity and healing if you choose to listen. Take the medicine where it is needed. Travel well my friends and be blessed".

This closing speech was followed by a beautiful song and hugs from everybody.

Joyce was taken by the welcoming attitude of everybody and she gladly accepted the invitation to the Pot Luck Feast that ended this workshop.

She knew she had to make a drum as well. She wanted to be part of the magic, she wanted to feel her own drum resonating in her body.
